The engine has an injector (34) movable between outer and inner positions. The injector is controlled in the outer and inner positions when a deflector (38) occupies open and closed positions respectively. The deflector opens a large part of an inlet pipe (24) from the injector side to direct a fuel spray (J) towards an outer wall (40) in the open position. The spray is guided in a passage (44) of the deflector in the closed position. The fuel spray is oriented towards portions of outer and inner walls (40, 42) of the pipe of a cylinder (12) in the outer and inner positions of the injector respectively.
