The method involves preheating a catalyst (5) having a metallic monolith (50), by voluntary action of a driver before starting a motor vehicle internal combustion engine (3), using a preheating system (6) connected directly to the monolith. The voluntary preheating of the catalyst is triggered, by the driver, through an interface (8) placed on a vehicle opening anticipation system (9) or an interface (10) placed on a dashboard. The preheating system (6) is controlled by a control device (7) and is supplied by a 12 or 42 volts battery (2) of the motor vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a device for reducing pollutant emissions emitted by an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
