The device has a wireless communication terminal (T1) e.g. hands-free card, carried by a driver (C) of a motor vehicle (V). Another wireless communication terminal (T2) cooperates with the vehicle and is connected to a CPU that manages preheating and starting of an internal combustion engine. The latter terminal transmits an electric signal representative of functioning of a preheating system independent of a starting and running contactor when the former terminal is detected by the latter terminal. The CPU triggers preheating of a combustion chamber after reception of the signal.
