The engine has a cylinder (14) closed on top by a cylinder head (16) and in which a piston (12) is mounted. The piston, cylinder and head define a main combustion chamber (24). The piston and head define an auxiliary combustion chamber (28). The piston controls, through its position in the cylinder, communication between the chambers. The chamber (28) is conformed such that its rate of compression is high than that of the chamber (24). An independent claim is also included for a pressurized fuel injection method.
