The method involves determining the density of air in an inlet of a compression stage (34) of a turbocharger (36) by calculating the pressure or temperature of air in the upstream of the compression stage. The quantity of air admitted in a cylinder (10) is increased, without an action on the turbocharger, if the density of air is lower than a threshold density.
