The system has a Rankine cycle energy recovery circuit (3) comprising a bypass control valve (34) in parallel with a turbine (30) which provides a mechanical energy from a fluid at the vapor state. The valve is opened during a cold start of a vehicle and during a need to heat the passenger compartment so that the operation of the turbine is stopped. The valve is closed when the comfort level in the passenger compartment is at a satisfying level so that the turbine is operated.
