A treatment device for treating endometrial tissue has an elongate housing 208 having projection for abutting, in use, a body portion associated with the endometrial tissue, such as the neck of the cervix (figs 2, 13). A treatment applicator extends axially from the housing and incorporates a radiation, microwave etc., emitting element 202. An electronically controllable actuator, linear stepper etc, 504, is coupled to the housing and to the treatment applicator to move the treatment applicator axially relative to the housing in steps in response to a step control. Sweeping movements of the housing allow successive bands of eridometrial tissue to be treated. Sensors include an angular sweeping rate sensor 1602, position sensing 1604 and bending displacement sensing 1006 which can be used to help control the power applied to the tissue via a control system 1600.
