PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyvinyl ether-based block copolymer stably polymerized and having a narrow molecular weight distribution with a controlled molecular weight and high block properties and to provide a water-based ink for ink-jet printers having good jetting stability and fixing properties using the copolymer.;SOLUTION: A method for living cationic polymerization comprises starting polymerization of a segment at a time when the rate of reaction of a component monomer in a previous segment reaches 70-95% and further carrying out polymerization under conditions for 80 negative catalyst (mol)/catalyst (mol) and 3 negative catalyst (mol)/total amount (mol) of component monomers of each segment as polymerization conditions. Thereby, the polyvinyl ether-based block copolymer having the narrow molecular weight distribution and high block properties is obtained.
