PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a cemented carbide powder which has a low compact pressure, can be readily compressed and is suitable for producing a submicron cemented carbide through a powder metallurgy technology comprising milling, compression and sintering.;SOLUTION: The method uses 1-3 wt.% of a compression agent having a composition comprising 90 wt.% of polyethylene glycol and 10-75 wt.% of large-molecular-weight saturated or unsaturated fatty acid (containing 12 or more but less than 20 carbons) or a mixture of salts of the fatty acid containing at least one chosen from Al, Ba, Ca, Co, Cr, Mg, N, Na, V and Zn. Preferably, the grain size of the cemented carbide powder is on a submicron order. In a preferred embodiment of the method, prior to a wet milling step, a hard component essentially comprising a WC powder is subjected to dry preliminary milling for 2-45 hr using a ball mill equipped with a cemented carbide milling body or other appropriate dry milling technology.
