PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of selectively synthesizing only a benzene derivative which is a 1,3,5-isomer from an alkyne, and a catalyst for use in the method. PSOLUTION: The catalyst is used for cyclotrimerization of an alkyne compound, which is a binuclear niobium complex having tetrahydrothiophene as at least a part of its ligands. The benzene derivative is produced by cyclotrimerization of the alkyne compound using the binuclear niobium complex as a reaction catalyst.
