PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To regioselectively obtain a benzene derivative by subjecting a transition metal metallacyclopendadiene to a cyclization addition reaction with an alkyne compound in the presence of a bismuth halide. ;SOLUTION: This method for producing a benzene derivative of formula III comprises subjecting a transition metal (for example, zirconium) metallacyclopentadiene of formula I [M is a transition metal in the front portion of the periodic table; L1, L2 are each (substituted) cyclopentadienyl, indenyl, fluorenyl, an amine ligand, an ether ligand or the like; R1-R4 are each a 1-20C (substituted) alkyl, an alkenyl, a silyl or the like] to a cyclization addition reaction with an alkyne compound of formula II [R5, R6 are each a 1-20C (substituted) alkyl, an aromatic, a silyl, an alkoxy or the like] in the presence of a bismuth halide (for example, bismuth chloride) preferably in an aprotic solvent such as tetrahydrofuran.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
