PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus capable of readily estimating the progress of pyrolysis of a waste in an externally heated pyrolysis furnace, which has been difficult to carry out by a prior art method; and also to provide a method and apparatus for pyrolyzing a waste capable of stabilizing pyrolysis product yield.;SOLUTION: The method for estimating the progress of a pyrolysis of a waste comprises steps of: feeding a rubbery waste to an externally heated pyrolysis furnace to generate a pyrolysis gas; measuring the flow rate of the resulting pyrolysis gas, CH₄ gas content in the resulting pyrolysis gas, and the feed rate of the waste; calculating the yield of CH₄ gas generated per unit weight of the waste from the above measurement results; and estimating the progress of the pyrolysis from the calculated yield of the generated CH₄ gas. The operating condition of the externally heated furnace is controlled so that the yield of the generated CH₄ gas thus estimated is kept in a specific range.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
