PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a secondary cooling technique capable of preventing occurrence of surface cracks and internal cracks only by improving the cooling method for cast slab without changing the component of the cast slab while keeping the productivity of a continuous caster as before. PSOLUTION: The cast slab in the vertical part is cooled by an edge-off method without spraying water onto both edge parts of short sides and long sides. In this case, the edge-off amount of the long wall sides defined as [(the cast slab width)-(the spraying width)]/2 is controlled to 125 to 250 mm, and the water amount density of the cooling water sprayed to both edge parts of the long sides in the cast slab at the passing time through a bending part is controlled according to the width-cutting amount.
