PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To adjust the processing characteristic of a plurality of signal processing systems accurately and for a short time which process images from a reading means that outputs read images as a signal of a plurality of systems. SOLUTION: In the conventional method in which the processing characteristic (black/white level adjustment) of two systems of analog processing circuits 321 and 322 is adjusted through a serial processing, the adjustment time increases by the number of systems. The adjustment is done for only one system, and its adjustment value is set as a substitute value for the other systems to reduce the adjustment time. A control unit CPU 51 controls adjustment and setting. The adjustment is determined by the following methods: (1) to determine a system to be adjusted in advance, (2) to adjust all systems first and select a system on the basis of the result, and (3) to change a system every adjustment.
