PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound for improving its functionalities by introducing 2-4 functional thiol groups into aromatic rings connected rigidly in a linear chain state.;SOLUTION: A tetramercaptobiphenyl is expressed by formula (1) [wherein, M₁, M₂ are each selected independently from the group consisting of H, Na, Li and K; R₁ to R₇ are H, a substituted or non-substituted alkyl, a substituted or non-substituted aryl, a substituted or non-substituted alkoxy, an alkoxycarbonyl, aldehyde, nitoso, nitro, a substituted or non-substituted amino, or the like; and E₁, E₂ are each SM₃, SM₄ (M₃, M₄ are each the same as the M₁ or M₂) or the same as the R₁ to R₇], and the method for synthesizing the compound is also provided.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
