PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To transmit/receive a character message in a transmission mode corresponding to the state of a user.;SOLUTION: A character message communication system comprises a mobile terminal 5 connected to a mobile communication network 4, an information terminal 3 connected to a computer network 2, and a server 1 connected to the mobile communication network and the computer network. The information terminal 3 comprises state detecting means 22, 23, 24, detects an operating state including at least a connection state with the computer network and notifies the server 1 of the operating state. The server 1 comprises a state management means 8, 9 and a determination means 10. The state management means 8, 9 holds, for each user, the operating state of the information terminal 3 notified from the state detecting means 24.
