PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a new alkanethiol derivative of biffarrocene, capable of facilitating the control of a film thickness, excellent in reproducibility, and useful for production of electron device such as a single electron element at a low cost by a simple process. ;SOLUTION: This oligoferrocenylene derivative is a compound of formula I or II [(n) is 1-17], e.g. 8-biferrocenyloctanethiol-8-one. The compound of formula I or II is obtained, for example, by reacting a compound of formula III with an acid chloride of the formula Br(CH2)nCOCl in the presence of aluminum chloride to provide a compound of formula IV, refluxing the obtained compound of formula IV with thiourea of the formula CS(NH2)2 in ethanol, adding a diluted aqueous solution of NaOH to the refluxed mixture, and further refluxing the mixture with the added NaOH. A metal cluster having the surface chemically modified with the oligoferrocenylene is preferably prepared by reacting a metal cluster having a alkanethiol as a dispersion stabilizer with the alkanethiol derivative of the oligoferrocenylene.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
