The invention relates to a method and to a device for determining a petroleum characteristic of a sample heated in a non-oxidizing atmosphere the temperature thereof being raised successively to a first value below 200°C substantially constant for some time, then to a second value ranging between 600 and 850°C, reached with a temperature gradient ranging between 0.2 and 50°C/min, from the first value. In the method and the device, the amount of CO2 contained in the effluent resulting from heating of the sample is continuously measured throughout said heating period a curve representative of the amount of CO2 is drawn and the CO2 of organic origin is differentiated from the CO2 of inorganic origin from the shape of the curve.
