The invention relates to novel antioxidants which are obtained from a natural and synthetic source and to a method of obtaining same. The invention also relates to a class of compounds having general formula 1, including (-)-2-(3',4'- dihydroxyphenyl)tetrahydrofuran-3,4-diol ((-)-2a) and to the use thereof as antioxidant agents. The invention further relates to a method of isolating ((-)-2a) from culture broths of phytopathogenic fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and to a preparation method involving the chemical synthesis of compounds having general formula 1, including compound ((+/-)-2a).
