A method of evaluating a compound exhibiting inhibitory activity of matrix metalloproteinase for inhibiting metalloproteinase activity in vivo matrix displayed by the compound, which comprises subjecting to in situ zymography an isolated specimen from a mammal which has received the compound and comparing the specimen with a control, which is not administered any metalloproteinase inhibitor.
