TREATMENT AND PREVENTION OF ADVERSE EFFECTS OF REACTIVE OXYGEN SPECIES

Bucillamine and N-2,2-dimethyl-3-mercaptopropionyl)-L-cysteine or relatedcompounds can be used to prevent damage to livingtissue from the formation or presence of reactive oxygen species. Thesereactive oxygen species are formed when tissue is first renderedhypoxic due to interruption of blood flow and then reoxygenated by restorationof blood flow. In particular, the invention is directed tothe administration of bucillamine and N-2,2-dimethyl-3-mercaptopropionyl)-L-cysteine prior to or coincidental with reperfusion to preventdamage to myocardium from formation of reactive oxygen species. Also presentedare applications of these compounds to similar ischemia-relatedcell injury in other organs.
