The present invention includes a method for a combined use of a localpositioning system (174), a local RTK system (150) and a regional, wide-area,or global differential carrier-phase positioning system (100) (WADGPS) inwhich disadvantages associated with the local positioning system (174), theRTK (150) and the WADGPS (100) navigation techniques when used separately areavoided. The method includes using a known position of a user receiver (142)that has been stationary or using ah RTK system (150) to initialize thefloating ambiguity values in the WADGPS system (100) when the user receiver(142) is moving. Thereafter, the refraction-corrected carrier-phasemeasurements obtained at the user GPS receiver (142) are adjusted by includingthe corresponding initial floating ambiguity values and the floating ambiguityvalues are treated as well known (small variance) in subsequent processes toposition the user receiver (142) in the WADGPS system (100).
