Detecting pathogenesis of, and/or diagnosing, transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE) in humans and other vertebrates by determining, in a subject sample, the levels of neurotoxins (NT); NT-producing microorganisms (A) and/or zinc. An independent claim is also included for a packaged unit for performing the new method.
