A composition comprising anthocyanin is provided to be able to be used as a prophylactic or therapeutic agent for cerebral infarction and stroke by using brain cell protecting effect of the anthocyanin. The brain cell protecting agent comprises at least one anthocyanin represented by the formula(1), wherein each R1 to R7 is independently H, OH, OCH3, provided that the R4 and R5 may include sugar such as glucose, galactose, mannose, and xylose. The anthocyanin is selected from the group consisting of cyanidin, delphinidin, malvidin, pelargonidin, peonidin, and petunidin.
