A method for preparing a lithium nickel composite oxide-containing cathode active material is provided to obtain a cathode active material having high capacity, high cost efficiency and excellent thermal stability. A method for preparing a lithium nickel composite oxide-containing cathode active material comprises the steps of: (a) roasting nickel hydroxide or nickel oxyhydroxide containing nickel as a main ingredient and at least one element selected from other transition metal elements, Group 2 elements and Group 13 elements as a side ingredient under an ambient atmosphere at 600-1100 deg.C; (b) mixing the nickel oxide with a lithium compound and firing the mixture under an oxygen atmosphere at a maximum temperature of 650-850 deg.C to provide fired powder of a compound represented by the formula of MlNi1-aMaO2 (wherein M is at least one element selected from transition metal elements other than Ni, Group 2 elements and Group 13 elements, and a ranges from 0.01 to 0.5); and (c) washing the fired powder in a time satisfying the condition that A is equal to or less than B/40 (wherein A is a washing time in minutes and B is a slurry concentration in the unit of g/L), followed by filtering and drying to obtain a lithium nickel composite oxide.
