PURPOSE: To improve an ion exchanger having pressure loss less than those of conventional ones and be able to recover useful biological resources by introducing functional group to the surface of an open cell polyurethane, thereby providing chemically and mechanically stable synthetic polymer. CONSTITUTION: The polymer ion exchanger has many ion exchanging functional groups by surface-modifying an open cell polymer foam with atmospheric pressure plasma to introduce reactive peroxides thereto and then graft-polymerizing it with monomer having ion exchange functional groups. The method comprises steps of (a) preparing a polymer foam having regular size; (b) physicochemically washing the polymer foam; and (c) after treating the washed polymer foam with atmospheric pressure plasma or atmospheric pressure argon-oxygen plasma, polymerizing it with a liquid phase monomer. The ion exchanger is used for separation, purification and recovery of biological products such as protein, enzyme and amino acid.
