A method for enhancing microorganism susceptibility to propionic acid by regulating rpoS(RNA polymerase sigma(38) subunit) gene expression in Escherichia coli is provided to reduce addition of preservative such as the propionic acid into food by inhibiting prpBCDE gene expression through inhibiting RpoS expression or activity. The microorganism susceptibility to propionic acid is increased by inhibiting expression of rpoS gene and prpBCDE gene through an antisense nucleotide or siRNA(small interfering RNA) which complementarily binds with the rpoS gene, wherein the microorganism is Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Bacillus, Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas, Filamentous fungi, yeast, Legionella, Rhodopirellula, Aquifex, Chromobacterium, Yersinia, Shigella or Vibrio.
