Biosynthesis of organic compound (A) from a reactant, useful for the preparation of e.g. chemicals, comprises culturing and sub-culturing phototrophic microorganisms; and mixing the sub-cultured microorganisms with a reactant, reducing agent and/or co-substrate; where the reactant is not converted to the product in the absence of light or under insufficient exposure of phototrophic microorganism as biocatalyst.
