Preparation of nitric acid comprises combusting ammonia by passing air at low pressure in a compressor, forming nitrogen gas at high pressure and partially introducing water to nitrogen gas, where: the obtained nitric acid does not absorb residual gas for the extraction; the residual gas expands at atmospheric pressure; the combustion process takes place in a first multi-wave transmission turbo compressor (18) with the processing air and a primary wheel (20); and the forming process takes place in a second multi-wave transmission turbo compressor (25) with a particle expander (12). Preparation of nitric acid by two-compression process, comprises combusting ammonia by passing air at low pressure in a compressor, forming nitrogen gas at high pressure and partially introducing water to nitrogen gas, where: the obtained nitric acid does not absorb residual gas for the extraction; the residual gas expands at atmospheric pressure; the combustion process takes place in a first multi-wave transmission turbo compressor (18) with the processing air and a primary wheel (20); the forming process takes place in a second multi-wave transmission turbo compressor (25) with a particle expander (12) and a secondary wheel (24) and the first compressor and the second compressor are coupled. An independent claim is included for a plant for the preparation of nitric acid.
