Nematic liquid crystalline polymer (A), obtained by the polymerization of a nematic pre-polymer containing carboxylic acid ester (I) of formula (R-(OCOO)q-A1-Z1-A2-(Z2-A3)m-(Z3-A4)n-(OCOO)r-Sp-P1); where the ratio of the optical anisotropy in a wave length of 436 nm to the optical anisotropy in a wave length of 589 nm at 20[deg]C is = 1.15, is new. A1-A41,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-cyclohexenylene (where some or 2 non-adjacent CH2 group is substituted by O, S or CF2 and by -CN or -NCS) optionally substituted with F, Cl or -CN substituted 1,4-phenylene, in which one or two CH-groups are substituted by 1,4-bicyclo[2.2.2]octylene, 1,4- or 2,6-naphthylene group; A21,4-piperanzinylene; P1polymerizable group; Sp : 1-20C alkyl (where: one or more non-adjacent CH2 groups are substituted by -O, -S, -COO, -OOC, -COS, -SOC or -CO, no two oxygen atoms are connected together, and two adjacent CH2 groups are substituted by -CH=CH, -C?=C, F, Cl and/or -CN); R : H, Cl, F, -CN, -NO2, 1-20C alkyl (where: one or more non-adjacent CH2 groups are substituted by -O, -S, -COO, -OOC, -COS, -SOC or -CO, no two oxygen atoms are connected together, and two adjacent CH2 groups are substituted by -CH=CH, -C?=C, F, Cl and/or -CN, and alternatively by -Sp-P1); Z1-Z3-COO, -OOC, -CH2CH2, -OCH2, -CH2O, -OCF2, -CF2O, -CH=CH, -C?=C or a single bond; and either m, n, q, r : 0-1; or q+r : 1-2. An independent claim is included for a liquid crystal display containing (A).
