The control unit has an ideal gear identifier (21) to determine the ideal gear and when this changes to determine a parameter (k) which indicates a measure for a probability of a further change of the ideal gear. It then establishes the gear which is to be engaged in dependence on the ideal gear and the parameter. The switch is dependent on whether the gear to be engaged deviates from the actual gear by one or more than one gear. An independent claim describes method for operating automatic transmission in vehicles by determining the ideal gear and when this changes by determining the parameter to show the probability of a further change and then establishing the gear to be engaged.
