The method involves issuing a close range warning signal when an obstacle (3) is detected in a close range (10, 11) of a vehicle (1) and when driving speed (V1) of the vehicle is smaller than a pre-set speed threshold. A remote range warning signal is issued when the obstacle lies beyond the close range of the vehicle. A judgment is made if a danger of collision of the vehicle with the obstacle exists. An independent claim is also included for a device for performing a method for assisting a driver of the vehicle.
