A lighting unit for motor vehicles comprises a first light unit with light source and reflector and a second light unit having a light source and a flat light conductor that extends around and across the optical axis of the first light unit. There are recesses (13) in the inner surface section (12) of the conductor having no uncoupling elements giving a high efficiency of the first light and also uncoupling regions (14) in which a lower efficiency results.
