The underground heat energy storage (5) has a container (18) made from a flexible and or flexible material, arranged in the earth. A storage medium (19) is stored in the container. A preferably box shaped thermal insulation (11, 13, 20) is provided for the container where the thermal insulation consists of several self-supporting, pressure resistant and connected insulating units. The storage medium is coupled to an energy transfer system (4) to feed and or withdraw heat energy. The storage medium is water. The container material is a plastic or a rubber foil. An independent claim is included for a method.
