The hydraulic drive and control unit with a double-acting linear actuator (12) for lifting and lowering and/or swivelling of a load, has a single-acting linear actuator (24) located in the hydraulic fluid return line (42) and controllable by a pressure control valve (22). The operating component (26) of the single-acting actuator, in the unpressurized state, by spring force interacts with a blocking unit (28) for blocking an undesired or spontaneous return motion of the load, and which in a state in which it is pressurized by hydraulic fluid is disengaged from the blocking unit. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a method for control of a hydraulic system with a double-acting linear actuator for lifting and lowering a load; and (2) a method for operating a hydraulic drive and control unit.
