Method for reducing unwanted nitrogen oxide emissions from an internal combustion engine comprises adapting each operating point of the engine and the state of the catalyst to a nitrogen oxide oxidation activity and varying the flow of the catalyst by the exhaust gas flow with the aid of an adjusting part so that only nitrogen oxide theoretical components necessary for subsequent post treatment are present in the exhaust gas downstream of the catalyst. An independent claim is also included for a device for carrying out the above method. Preferred Features: The catalyst contains platinum and/or platinum oxide as active components. The adjusting part is formed as a flap or sliding part.
