The device (100) has a video signal source (110) for supplying video signals, and a video interface (115) for connecting the feeding device to a display device (200). A presence detect unit (120) is provided for detecting presence of a person at an area of the feeding device and/or at an area of the display device. A control unit (130) is provided for controlling the video signal source depending on a presence signal that is delivered by the unit (120). The unit (120) is partly integrated into the feeding device, and exhibits a sensor (121) that is arranged outside the feeding device. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a device for feeding a video signal into a display device.
