The system has a light source comprising a light emitting diode (LED1) for generating excitation light for excitation of fluorescence in a biological sample. A probe (12) is provided to couple the excitation light in the sample and to decouple the fluorescence light emitted by fluorophore in the sample. A light conductor (13) has an optical receiving fiber, and a detector (D1) that is connected with a probe head using the fiber. A band-pass filter and an integrator for direct-current light suppression are connected with the detector and adjusted to temporal variation of the light emission. An independent claim is also included for a method for quantitative determination of fluorophore in a biological sample.
