The method involves setting a negative torque by an internal combustion engine (34) and an electric drive (36), and carrying out a continuous torque comparison stage (24) within a monitoring section (14). Verification is made to determine whether reference torques lie within torque regions of the combustion engine and electric drive by a torque testing region. The torque region of the internal combustion engine and the torque region of the electric drive are defined by torque region limitations. An independent claim is also included for a vehicle control device for drives for executing a method of controlling a vehicle drive unit.
