The method involves presetting a steering wheel angle as a measure for a desired steering angle for wheels (5a, 5b) of a motor vehicle (13) using a steering handle in a servo steering system (1). An associated steering angle for one wheel is regulated as reference signal based on desired driving direction of a driver by considering a model for a trailer operation, and is adjusted through the system (1) independently by the driver during reverse drive from an actual steering wheel angle.
