The method involves conducting exhaust gases of a group of cylinders by an exhaust system (20). The air-fuel mixture ratio is controlled by the fuel measuring systems (11,13) across the control unit. The lambda value is adjusted by an automatic control loop (160) on the basis of the signal from the exhaust probes (60,130). The exhaust probes are arranged in the direction of flow of the exhaust gas, prior to the catalyst (40) in the exhaust system. The lambda modulation of the lambda values of one exhaust system is synchronized in the other exhaust system (90).
