The method involves detecting (S1) the lambda value by a lambda sensor and the temperature of the exhaust gases by a temperature sensor. The residual gas fraction in a cylinder is determined (S2) by applying the measured lambda value corresponding to a combustion process model. The temperature of the exhaust gases is detected by the temperature sensor.
