The container (23) is of a cylindrical shape and accommodates two fluids positioned above one another and with different refractive indices. Several electrodes (1,2,3,4,5,9,10,11) are arranged around the surface (25) of the container (23) in order to create various contact angles of the interfacial area (35) between the two fluids in relation to the outer boundary. The container is provided with two light permeable windows (27,28) facilitating the entering and leaving of the beams to be deflected. Independent claims are given for an image forming optical system with an integrated variable optical arrangement and for a surgical stereo microscope comprising the unit.
