The method involves determining the speeds of wheels (11 to 14) of a vehicle (1) and dependent on these wheel speeds a vehicle variable state is estimated. Dependent on vehicle variable state, a future lane (I, II) of the vehicle is predicted. For estimating the vehicle variable state information, driving dynamics control system is considered such as an ESP system (16). An independent claim is included for a driver assistance system.
