The method involves switching-on or off pump storage sets (8-11) during achievement of a marginal power by an effective power desired value as a result of the changing of a power requirement. A determination of the best operation combination with a smallest power dissipation sum of involved pump storage sets is constantly updated by a temporally changing power requirement of the effective power desired value and in consideration of the changes of efficiency characteristics by the influence of a head (12).
