The device has a microcontroller (1.1.1) executing both an anti-lock brake system (ABS) algorithm for controlling a brake system and a crash algorithm for controlling an occupant protection system. An auxiliary logic (4) is redundant and independent from the microcontroller, where the logic has a fail-safe algorithm. A watchdog monitors malfunctioning or an incorrect program flow of the microcontroller, and the auxiliary logic activates actuators in case of malfunctioning or the incorrect program flow of the microcontroller.
