The method involves defining right and left monitoring boundaries at sides of a roadway such as rail (2). A cross line between two points on the respective boundaries is diagonally scanned, so that the line is stationary to the roadway and is perpendicular to a moving direction of a rail vehicle. A vertical line between one of the points and a third point on the boundaries is longitudinally scanned so that the vertical line departs in the moving direction of the vehicle. The left monitoring boundary is diagonally scanned and subsequently longitudinally scanned.
