The device has a sensor unit (16) that is positioned in a turbine (10). An interiorly lying section (17) of a rotor-sided blade rim provided in a flow direction separates the sensor unit for generating an electrical signal that corresponds to a shaft breakage. The sensor unit is designed as an installed and reinstalled unit such as line replaceable unit. The unit extends into a linearly running recess (19) of a stator such that the sensor unit extends in a radial direction in a radial inner-lying area, in which the section of the blade rim of the turbine is positioned.
