The device has automatic transmission (22) with a movable unit (24), whose position is detected by a sensor (26) that influences a torque transferred from a drive shaft (12) to an output shaft (16). The sensor detects the position of the movable unit using a magnetic coding (20), and the magnetic coding serves as a sensing unit for the sensor. The sensor is arranged for movement with the movable unit and the magnetic coding is arranged for movement with the movable unit. The sensor is operated based on a magnetic induction effect or a magneto-resistive effect. An independent claim is also included for a method for automatic operation of a clutch device.
