The sensor device has a shaft (30) co-operating with sensor coils (22, 28), which are symmetrically arranged to a field coil (20). A coil longitudinal axis (42) of the field coil is arranged perpendicular to a shaft longitudinal axis (40). The sensor coils are arranged in a specific orientation to the shaft. The field coil and sensor coils are arranged in corners of an equilateral triangle with respect to the shaft such that measurement of torque, number of revolutions or torque and axial position of the shaft is feasible. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining characteristics of a shaft.
